Early signs of lameness can be difficult for even an experienced horse person. Frequently its not until a clear head nod, shortened stride, or reluctance to bear weight is noticed that a veterinary examination is prompted.


However, many musculoskeletal problems do not begin this way, instead, they develop gradually. Horses are remarkably good at adapting to discomfort, often altering how they move long before an obvious lameness becomes apparent. By the time a horse is visibly lame, those compensatory movement patterns may have been developing for weeks or even months.


Within the sports medicine sphere, there is an increasing focus on being able pre-empt these significant lameness. The question has now become:

Rather than relying solely on memory or subjective impressions, veterinarians can interpret new findings alongside objective historical information.


Why Baseline Assessments Add Value

Baseline assessments are not simply for elite competition horses.

They can provide valuable information for:

  • performance horses beginning a competition season

  • horses returning from injury

  • monitoring rehabilitation

  • ageing horses

  • horses with previous orthopaedic injuries

  • horses entering more intensive training


They may also be valuable when buying or selling a horse. Some horses naturally display small, consistent movement asymmetries without any evidence of pain or reduced performance. By having logged a movement footprint overtime, we are better able to understand if that movement is normal in the guise of a horse that may be performing well. This provides a useful context should movement questions arise in the future. Rather than creating uncertainty, baseline assessments often reduce it.

Monitoring Change Over Time

A single assessment provides a snapshot, while repeated assessments over time are able to tell us a story.

It helps answer questions such as:

  • Is rehabilitation progressing as expected?

  • Has workload influenced movement?

  • Has an ageing horse remained stable?

  • Has a subtle asymmetry become more significant?

Instead of relying on isolated observations, clinicians can make decisions using information collected over time.

Technology Supports Clinical Decision-Making

Objective gait analysis is becoming an increasingly valuable tool within equine sports medicine.

It provides measurable information about movement symmetry that complements, rather than replaces, a thorough veterinary examination and doesn't provide a diagnosis in itself. Rather it's value lies in identifying asymmetry, supporting clinical reasoning, helping identify subtle changes, monitoring progress, and providing objective information that can assist decision-making.

Like ultrasound or radiography, it is another diagnostic tool used within the context of the whole horse.

Looking to the Future

One of the strongest themes emerging from equine sports medicine is a move away from simply reacting to disease and towards monitoring health. The goal is not to investigate every horse because technology allows us to rather, recognise meaningful change earlier, make informed decisions sooner, and support horses throughout longer, healthier athletic careers.

By understanding how an individual horse moves today, we may be better equipped to recognise when that movement changes tomorrow.
